Elaine Macdonald · Independent Funeral Celebrant · Kent & Sussex Creating personal and meaningful farewells

Saying goodbye to someone you love is one of life's hardest moments. You want a service that feels personal and comforting – one that truly honours their life, character and achievements, rather than a one-size-fits-all ceremony.

Funeral ceremonies

A ceremony as unique as the person it honours

Every life tells a story, and you want theirs told well. You're looking for someone who will listen, understand, and weave together the memories, values and experiences that made your loved one special – a ceremony that captures their personality and reflects what mattered most to them.

Whether you're planning a funeral, a celebration of life, a memorial or a simple gathering to scatter ashes, you want a ceremony that feels authentic, meaningful and memorable.

Your service can include

  • Personal tributes and eulogies
  • Family memories and stories
  • Favourite music and songs
  • Poems and readings
  • Religious, spiritual or non-religious elements
  • Moments of reflection
  • Visual tributes and photographs
  • Participation from family and friends

There are no “standard” ceremonies. Every service is thoughtfully written and tailored to the individual being remembered.

Every life tells a story.

Kent & Sussex

Every kind of farewell

There is no single right way to say goodbye. You may want a traditional funeral, a relaxed celebration of life, a gathering weeks after the cremation, or a quiet moment outdoors where they loved to be.

Whatever you have in mind, and wherever you would like it to be, you want a ceremony that is dignified, personal and true to them – and someone to guide you gently through every step.

Funeral services

A personal, heartfelt service at a crematorium, cemetery chapel or graveside, written around the person you are remembering.

Celebrations of life

A warmer, more uplifting gathering – at home, in a garden, a village hall, a favourite pub or hotel – full of stories, music and laughter as well as tears.

Memorial services

A ceremony held days, weeks or months later – ideal after a direct cremation, or when family need time to travel and gather.

Woodland & natural burials

A gentle, outdoor farewell in a natural burial ground, surrounded by trees, open sky and the changing seasons.

Scattering & interring ashes

A short, meaningful ceremony at a place that mattered – a beach, a hillside, a garden – or at a family plot.

Remembrance & anniversaries

Memorial tree plantings, bench dedications and anniversary gatherings that keep their memory close.

How it works

What to expect

  1. Initial conversation

We'll arrange a convenient time to talk – in person, by telephone or online. Tell me about your loved one: their favourite music, what they loved (and what they didn't), their special qualities and achievements. You can suggest poems or readings, and whether you or other family members would like to speak.

  2. Creating the ceremony

Using what you share, I'll write a personalised ceremony that reflects the life, interests, values and personality of your loved one.

  3. Reviewing the service

You'll have the chance to review the tribute and make any changes, so that everything feels right for you and your family.

  4. Leading the ceremony

On the day, I'll conduct the service with warmth, professionalism and compassion, allowing you to focus on being with family and friends.

For every family

Religious, spiritual and non-religious services

You want a ceremony that reflects your family's beliefs and wishes – whatever they may be. Every service is a celebration of a life.

  • Religious
  • Semi-religious
  • Non-religious
  • Spiritual
  • Mixed beliefs
  • Memorial services

What matters most is a service that feels right for your family.

About me

Meet Elaine

Hello and a warm welcome! I'm Elaine Macdonald, an NOCN-approved independent Celebrant based in Southborough, Tunbridge Wells.

During 33 rewarding years as a teacher of young children, I've spent my life listening to people and telling engaging stories. Every person, every family is unique, and I bring a heart full of compassion, understanding, and care to everything I do. With a degree in Education and a specialism in Drama, I love using my skills to write and present beautiful, bespoke ceremonies with confidence, warmth, and a smile.

When I'm not helping families create unforgettable memories, you'll find me singing in a soul choir, baking, volunteering at a food bank, running in the local Parkrun or in the middle of a muddy field supporting my husband and son at a cross country race! I love reading, music and dancing, but my ultimate happy place is walking in the mountains, enjoying the beauty and freedom of nature.

It would be an honour and a privilege to partner with you, shaping your thoughts into a beautiful, personalised service that your family and friends will treasure forever.
